West Main St. Winery -- Ravenna, OH

When I first started this blog Dave and I were living in our first apartment in Ravenna, OH studying for the Ohio bar exam. Several moves and new jobs later, Dave is back to work in the city and when a coworker told him about a new winery opening just around the corner from his office and our old apartment were were certainly intrigued.

Opening day for West Main St. Winery started at noon this past Friday and Dave, my coworker Sarah, and I headed over around 5:00 p.m. The space was pretty full when we arrived, a big group had pushed together several tables, but we snagged one of the last four person tables available. The tasting room overlooks Main Street, with future plans to renovate the second floor to a meeting/party room. The Wades purchased the building two-and-a-half years ago and have been renovating the space which was built in 1875 ever since.

Unlike the Ohio wineries that grow their own grapes, owners Jim and Deanne Wade purchase grape juice from all over the world and Jim works hard to transform that grape juice into delicious wine varieties on premise. The winery currently offers 13 wines, seven sweet and six dry.

Sarah opted to sample all of the sweet wines, whereas Dave and I conquered a sweet and a dry sampler. The full menu of wines, including descriptions, can be found on the West Main St. Winery website.

Dry Reds
1.) Cabernet Sauvignon
2.) Carmenere
3.) Pinot Noir

Dry Whites

2.) Riesling
3.) Gewürztraminer

Sweet Reds
1.) Blue Raven
2.) Six Seeds
3.) Summer Time
4.) Acai

2.) June Bug
3.) Maria Ann

Alecia's Favorites: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Blue Raven, Six Seeds, Maria Ann

Dave's Favorites: June Bug, Chardonnay, and Gewürztraminer

Sarah's Favorites: June Bug and Gewürztraminer.

After our samplers we ended up with glasses: Sarah ordered June Bug, I ordered Maria Ann, and Dave ordered the Gewürztraminer.

If you get a chance to ask for a tour while you're there it's great to learn about the history of the building and surrounding area of Ravenna. I won't spoil anything, but I did snap this photo of a piece of the Akron Beacon Journal from February 27, 1957. During the tour you also get a peek at where all of the wine making magic happens.

West Main St. Winery will be open 2:00-10:00 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and right now only serves cheese and crackers, but they're working on partnerships with local restaurants for guests in the future. Dave and I are happy to see new improvement in downtown Ravenna and are looking forward to more trips to West Main St. Winery in the future!
